How to Make Curtains: A Step-by-Step Guide

What is the process of making curtains? Let’s explore the mystery of curtain making with a home production process.
Step 1: Measure the dimensions. Measure the width of the window and add about a dozen centimeters on each side (this looks better with a little extra on both sides). If you need to cover the entire wall, measure the width of your wall. The amount of fabric for curtains is generally double the curtain rod, but you can use less, which means fewer folds. The common fabric usage is 1.8 to 2 times the fabric, the higher the ratio, the larger the folds, and the stronger the three-dimensional effect.

Step 2: Purchase fabric and gauze. Go to the market and buy fabric and gauze in a 1:2 ratio. For example, if the window is 2 meters wide, buy 2*2=4 meters. Note that if you are covering the entire wall, you need to buy fabric with a fixed height of 2.8 meters (2-meter fabric is not common).

Step 3: Buy fabric tape. The total width of the fabric and gauze requires the same length of fabric tape. Of course, it’s always better to buy a little extra just in case. Be sure not to sew up the small holes for hooks when processing the fabric tape. You can search online for detailed videos.

Step 4: Choose lace. You can choose your favorite color and style based on the color matching, but always prepare more, noting that each roll is not enough. For example, merchants claim 30 meters per roll, but in reality, there are only 25 meters, which is the industry norm. Also, note that for curtains that pull to the side, there are four vertical edges and one bottom edge. Everyone has different preferences, some people add lace in unexpected places, which is very distinctive.

Step 5: Track or Roman rod. The length of the track is the length of the wall’s curtain box. If there is no curtain box installed, you can use a Roman rod, and the width can be determined according to your needs. Notes: a) If the track and Roman rod are too long, they can be easily cut with a saw. b) If there is both fabric and gauze, two tracks need to be installed. c) If it’s a bay window, you need to buy a curved track. The price is about the same.

Step 6: Make valances. If you still have leftover fabric, it is recommended to make valances. Detailed operations can be found in online videos.

Step 7: Processing methods. The four edges of the curtain need to be folded a bit to prevent fraying. You can ask someone with experience, and you may gain unexpected insights.

Step 8: Difficulty. If you make it yourself, it is not easy to control the height because the top of the curtain does not go directly to the roof, there are tracks, hooks, etc. Generally, the height of the curtain is 5 centimeters less than the height from the top of the curtain box to the floor. When making, first process the top of the curtain, that is, make the fabric tape. Then process the four edges, and finally process the bottom edge, do not cut the bottom edge, it can be folded on the back, which is both beautiful and adjustable in height.

The editor summarizes that curtains look better with folds. If you want a better overall effect, buy fabric that is twice the width of the window. If you want to save some money, buy fabric that is 1.5 times the width of the window. Here we are just giving our professional advice. If it is less than 1.5 times, it won’t look good.

Choose your favorite fabric and then make beautiful curtains by yourself. When you open the window, the sunlight shines on the curtains, and the reflected light will illuminate our beloved small home. This feeling is especially warm and comfortable.
